Possiable Locations

I have thought of two sutible locations for my video;

The first is an empty theater. I think this would fit it well with the theater masks and some of the other elements I plan to include in my video but would not leave much visualy in the background as theater backdrops are typically just black curtains.

The second is an empty multistory carpark. They have connotations of mystery and the rebelious values of my teen audience and would offer more of a visually exciting backdrop than a theater stage.

Graphic Test

This is an idea I had for my music video. It involves useing imported graphics to emphasise movement and action. This was only a minor test but I decided the look wasnt what I hoped it would be and althought I would like to follow this up and work on this effect it wont ever suit the style of music video I wish to create. This also shows the editing skills I have already developed throught my short time useing adobe premier pro.

Idea Development

I have carefully chosen which member of the band should wear each mask to represent their part in the band and their role in the music video.
The Drummer - Anger
hockey is seen as an incredibly violent and angry sport. I chose the this as the dummer's mask as the drums are the most violent instrument in the band as it involves alot of upper body movement and is the only percussion instrument.

Lead Guitarist/Backing Vocals - Split-Part Mask
The half face mask I have given to the lead guitarist/backing vocalist as of his split part in the band.

Bassist - Death/Silence
Through history crows have been known to pick the bodies of fallen soldiers on a battlefield after war. Becuase of this they now have connotations similar to that of a vulture. A creature that stands by the sides silently but is always noticeable. This reflects the bassists part in the band as the bass often fades into the background but is always noticeable as it sets the tempo for the other instruments. I also plan to reinforce this role of death in my video.

Lead Vocals - Open mouth

Characters Representing The Dark - Covered/lack of personality/conformed/"Phantom of the Opera"
I plan to have the five characters representing the dark wearing full Phantom of the opera face masks which I will paint black. The fact they cover their faces means they have a distinct lack of personality meaning the audience will not sympathise with them but rather with the band. They will all wear conforming masks as they are there to represent the companies and artists who produce the music that is considered the normal and currently control the charts and the mainstream. My target audience will relate to this as they try to fight against this norm and see this music as comformatist. The phantom of the opera is about a phantom who tries to control a talented girl called Christine. Christine is trained by the phantom but falls in love Raoul. The phantom sees this as a betrayal and becomes angry with Christine. My video will relate to this as the dark characters will be like the phantom trying to control Christine who would be the music but the music belongs with the band causeing the dark masked characters to lash out.

Analysis of The Amity Affliction - Youngbloods

The Amity Affliction – Youngblood’s

Song Meaning and Video Narrative
This is another example of a performance video. The song itself is about living life to the fullest and refusing to grow old and die. “Youngblood” suggest this is aimed at a teenage audience who they want to relate themselves to as much as possible.

Mise-en-scene
The first thing I notice is how the band is seen on the same level as the performance’s audience rather than up on a stage and how many shots of them there are mixed in or interacting with the audience. This is to involve them with the audience and the audience with the song which they want all teenagers to relate to. Because of this the audience in the video consists of teenagers. Throughout the video the band is surrounded by dust or dirty smoke in the air. Teenage boys have connotations of being dirty and this smoke is put in to reinforce the fact they are and want to stay teenage boys. The only shots that differ from the band shots are of a small skate park with a few boys doing tricks and shots of the performance audience.  They are both lit with bright blue lighting to separate them from the bands bright yellow lighting. This is so we can distinguish between who is the band and who is the audience when the two are so close together or the edits are quick and we only get a fraction of a second to look at a shot. The shots of the skate park also have the dirty smoke that is seen in the shots of the band.

Cinematography
Most shots are low angle close ups of band members of their instruments. This is conventional of the Rock/Metal genre. Although this could also be to give the impression you are there in the crowd making the audience watching relate with them.

Editing
The editing if fast paced and jumpy to match the song. It does slow down during the song chorus to again match the song.

Sound
The sound is the track played through the video. There is no extended narrative with any other sound.

Anylasis of Alter Bridge - Isolation

Song Meaning and Video Narrative.
The video is a performance video but takes this a step further by showing what the band do between shows in the form of a short mock documentary. It shows the band in travel meaning we see how hard they work, this is narcissistic as the band are in a way showing us how great and hard working they are although for a fan this is voyeuristic as we enjoy seeing the band off stage as it allows us to know more about them and allows us to feel like we can travel with them. The narrative is non-linear and jumps from performance to documentary. The songs meaning is about the lead singer’s time between bands when he was all alone trying to perform and then finding his current band and moving on to something better.

Mise-en-Scene
The video starts showing the band arriving at the airport with their luggage and we are shown departures lists showing the band are travelling somewhere. Iconic shots of London let us know this is where the band has traveled to. All of this is to show where the band is performing and give an idea of the travelling the band has to go through from gig to gig. Shots of locations are then followed by shots of the band preparing to perform or doing other work associated with the band. There are lots of shots of the audience’s reaction throughout the video showing how much they enjoy the show. There are more shots of the band both back and on stage interwoven until 1:25 where shots of famous French buildings are shows. Like the shots of classic London buildings this signifies a change of location and directly after we are shown shots of the band traveling to this location. Now at multiple points the lead singer Miles Kennedy starts to be shown stood alone on stage or alone in rooms. This reflects the meaning of the song which is about the lead singer’s time between bands when he was all alone trying to perform and then finding his current band and moving on to something better.  At 2:00 the lead singer is shown standing on stage as the only one lit facing out into complete black which slowly fades to reveal a crowd, the shot after this is also similar showing lights slowly moving up to reveal a crowd. This I think is bringing emphasis to how big the crowds are that come to see the band and to let us know Miles did used to perform alone. Part way through the songs guitar solo we are shown the coliseum in Rome letting us know another change in location and continuing the on-going tour theme.

Cinematography
The shots of Iconic London Buildings and locations are all done as a time lapse meaning what may be an hours worth of film is condensed down into a few seconds quickening the pace of the film to match the pace of the track. The shots of them performing are conventional Heavy Rock/Metal shots. Most are low angle close-ups making the band seem dramatic and powerful as well as highlighting their skill on their instruments. The camera is mounted through tout these shots increasing the look and production value. This is contrasting to the documentary shots that are hand held Cinéma vérité or "fly on the wall documentary" shots meaning the band in the shots are aware of the cameras presence as are we as the audience. Alot of the documentary shots are shot in black and white which is inter textual to other historic music documentaries such as "Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back" or "The Beatles - A Hard Days Night"

Editing
At 0:08 we get shown a plane landing signalling to us they have arrived at their destination. Juxtaposed to this is a montage of shots showing iconographic London buildings.this  The speed of the editing throughout the song depends on informs us of where the band has landed. Most of the editing related directly to how fast the music part is. Such as at the beginning of the solo as the tempo of the song speeds up so does the editing to match and afterward in the breakdown the pace slows and so does the editing.

Sound
The sound throughout is the song there is no additional diagetic sound in the video but the music is in time with the video so the performances you see on stage match the part of the song they represent.  At certain parts the lyrics reinforce what we see on the screen such as at 2:00 when the lyric “Isolation” comes up the lead singer is shown alone on stage the same lyric is later repeated and again the lead singer is shown alone in a room. This is what we seen on screen and the song reinforcing each other and the song meaning.  As the words “to make things better” are sung multiple times after the solo we are shown shots of miles on and off stage with the rest of the band letting us know this is who he is referring too.
